Frequently Asked Questions
Patch Care
How do I wash the patch?
All patch products are made with a variety of fabrics. The type of fabric in the patch will require a different washing regimen.
Cotton and cotton-blend fabrics are machines washable with similar fabrics on a cold and delicate cycle. Garments should first be turned inside out before entering the washing machine to reduce exposure to other clothes and possible damage. More delicate patches made with cotton should be hand washed or spot-cleaned with cold or lukewarm water and a small amount of detergent to reduce the chance of damage from the washing machine.
Silk, Polyester, and Nylon fabric patches should be spot cleaned with cold or lukewarm water and a small amount of detergent.
Embroidered Patches are stitched with 100% cotton thread. We recommend spot cleaning the embroidery with a solution of water and distilled vinegar OR mild detergent, using a damp cloth with cold water. You may gently rub the embroidery to remove dirt or stains.
For more information on how to spot-clean your patch, visit the Youtube video, How To: Clean Your Patch.
How do I dry my patch?
Clothing with Patch Attached: Garments with a cotton patch can be dried in the machine on a low heat cycle with clothing turned inside out to reduce the chances of the patch getting damaged. For more delicate patches, hang the garment to air dry.
Individual patch
An individual patch that is non-attached to anything can lay flat to dry once washed.
How do I iron my patch?
If the patch wrinkles due to washing, iron on low heat on both sides if necessary. Place a thin towel or piece of fabric in between the patch and the iron to protect the fabric from potential heat damage. Sometimes heat will alter the fabric, so this step of precaution is very important.
For more information on how to iron your patch, visit the Youtube video, How To: Iron Your Patch, which has helpful tips in this tutorial.
Can I use bleach to clean it?
If the patch is made with all white cotton fabric and there are stains or markings, bleach is only recommended in very small amounts with the spot cleaning technique.
General Questions
How sturdy is the patch?
Each patch is made with great care. It is stitched in a way to ensure it will be sturdy and last. That being said, it is important that the wearer of the patch treats it with great care and is not too rough with it.
How do I apply the patch onto clothing?
Patches can be sewn or safety-pinned onto clothing. If you have little to no experience sewing, visit the Youtube Patchamima Channel to watch several tutorials on how to apply the patch for beginners. Where do you source your materials from, especially the fabric?
Fabrics are sourced from local recycled art stores, fabric shops, thrift stores, personal clothing, is donated by the community, or has been collected on travels. All fabric is washed before being sold.
How do you properly dispose of a patch if it is getting old and worn out past use?
Consider getting creative with ways to use your patch even if it is getting worn out. If you would like to mend the patch, it is possible to add more stitches to repair it or add fabric on top of it. If you have a hole in your clothes, it can be used to cover the hole on the inside of your garment- instead of being decorative, the patch becomes functional. Some ideas also include using it as a coaster, or bookmark (depending on its size). If all else fails, it can be disposed in the garbage, although this is the last resort in an attempt to reduce waste.
